Nairobi Convention Contracting Parties each appoint a Focal Point in order to help coordinate
efforts to protect, manage, and use the Western Indian Ocean at the national level. In practical
terms, this means the Focal Point is responsible for liaising between the Nairobi Convention
Secretariat, other Contracting Parties, and national bodies; coordinating national-level activities
that involve multiple stakeholders and “users” of the oceans; and providing national input into
regional-level projects and processes.
The Nairobi Convention is excited to announce that Tanzania has appointed a new Focal Point,
Ms. Emelda Teikwa Adam. Ms. Adam is the Principal Fisheries Officer within the Vice
President’s Office in the Division of the Environment. The Nairobi Convention welcomes Ms.
Adam officially to the team and looks forward to working with her and deepening its
engagement in Tanzania!
