Kenya acceded to the Nairobi Convention on 11 September 1990

Introduction

The Republic of Kenya covers a total area of 582,650 km2 and the coastline extends for a length of about 600 km.

There are four oceanic currents influencing Kenya’s coastal waters, namely the East African Coastal Current (EACC), the Somali Current (SC), the Southern Equatorial Current (SEC) and the Equatorial Counter Current (ECC).

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the estimated population in 2019 in Kenya was 47 million.

The Nairobi Convention Focal Ministry in Kenya is the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The country has appointed a Focal Point to the Nairobi Convention to help coordinate efforts to protect, manage, and use the Western Indian Ocean at the national level.
