September 11-15 2023
Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) involves all stakeholders to ensure sustainable development by managing coastal and marine ecosystems, promoting sustainable use of resources, and addressing the impacts of human activities. The ICZM Protocol serves as a framework for regional and national cooperation in managing the coastal zone sustainably in the Western Indian Ocean region. COP Decision CP 6/3 initiated the development of the ICZM Protocol through a consultative process, leading to subsequent meetings and negotiations that culminated in the submission of the seventh draft ICZM Protocol during COP7 in 2012.
The Contracting Parties at the tenth Conference of Parties – COP 10, held in November 2021, requested the Secretariat to convene a Conference of Plenipotentiaries before the eleventh meeting of the Contracting Parties.
The Conference of Plenipotentiaries for the Adoption of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Protocol for the Western Indian Ocean is scheduled to take place between September 11-15 2023 in Madagascar. The purpose of this conference will be to officially adopt and sign the Protocol on Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the Western Indian Ocean region. Government officials with delegated decision-making powers will sign the ICZM Protocol on behalf of their governments during the conference.
This meeting will be followed by the Second Negotiations Meeting for the Nairobi Convention Biodiversity Protocol.
