Regional Capacity Building on Environmental Flows and Source-to-Sea (S2S) Approach in WIO Countries
The training aims to build regional capacity in implementing approaches that address land-based sea challenges effectively. The training is informed by the objectives of the WIO-SAP Project which is intended “to reduce impacts from land-based sources and activities and sustainably manage critical coastal-riverine ecosystems through the implementation of the WIO-SAP priorities with the support of partnerships at national and regional levels” and, the outcomes of previous workshops and the need to enhance awareness, capacity, and establish a community of practice on Environment Flows Assessment and Source-to-Sea approaches in the Western Indian Ocean region. The training will strengthen the understanding of the need to harmonize social, economic, and environmental priorities across the land, freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems to improve environmental flows and reduce marine litter pollution.
The goal of the training is to accelerate the uptake of integrated source-to-sea system thinking to address challenges like inadequate environmental flows and marine pollution. The learning outcomes of the training will include an understanding of the relevance of Environment Flows Assessment, river system processes, legislation and policies influencing Environment Flows Assessment implementation, assessment methodologies, factors affecting successful implementation, downstream impacts of land-based activities, and decision support models for land-sea planning.
