Sessions on Ocean Governance and Promoting MPAs as a tool for management in the Western Indian ocean region at the 11 th Symposium of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA)

The Nairobi Convention, together with partners, will jointly host two special sessions during the upcoming WIOMSA Symposium on 5 July 2019 from 11:30 am – 5:30 pm. The first, on Promoting MPAs as a tool for management in the WIO Region: Progress towards achieving SDG 14, will discuss the upcoming Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Outlook; the process for a Transboundary MPA between Tanzania and Kenya; establishing an MPA Netowrk in the region, and how to improve the effectiveness of MPA management.

The second, on Ocean Governance in the Western Indian ocean region, will identify problems, priorities, and stakeholders for the development of a regional Ocean Governance Strategy; discuss the institutional set-up, themes, and concerns for the strategy; and align the strategy with other global processes.
