Protection of seagrasses key to building resilience to climate change, disasters – new UN report

The importance of seagrasses is highlighted in a new report, Out of the Blue: The Value of Seagrasses to the Environment and to People, released by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) together with GRID-Arendal and the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC).

New on-the-ground projects in the WIO to promote marine ecosystem management

For ocean governance to be effective, it must be coordinated and implemented at all levels, from the shores of local fishing communities to the conference rooms of international organizations. That is why the Nairobi Convention’s SAPPHIRE project issued a call for proposals for demonstration projects under two of its components to improve ocean governance.

Mangrove trees won’t survive sea-level rise by 2050 if greenhouse gas emissions aren’t reduced, according to a new study. Using sediment data from the last 10,000 years, an international team estimated the chances of mangrove survival based on rates of sea-level rise.

Study on shorebirds suggests that when conserving species, not all land is equal

Researchers may have solved the long-standing puzzle of why migratory shorebirds around the world are plummeting several times faster than coastal ecosystems are being developed. They discovered that shorebirds overwhelmingly rely on tidal zones closest to dry land, which are most often lost to development.
