Marine Regions Forum takes the next step in support of better Ocean Governance

The Marine Regions Forum supports thedevelopment of the marine regions, fosters dialogue between marine regions, and provides regional ocean governance with a voice in global processes. The second edition of the Marine Regions Forum conference will be organized in the Western Indian Ocean region in cooperation with the Nairobi Convention. The meeting will showcase progress, challenges and future opportunities in ocean governance and aims to accelerate transformative action in that region.

2nd Call Ecosystem-based Adaptation / Western Indian Ocean (2021)

Blue Action Fund is pleased to announce a new open Call for Proposals focusing on ‘Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) to Climate Change in the Western Indian Ocean’. This is a funding window which provides individual grants to selected NGOs for projects in Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa and Tanzania to support coastal and marine Ecosystem-based Adaptation and sustainable livelihoods. They expect to fund projects with a total volume of up to EUR 20 million. Concept Notes are due by 10 December 2021, midnight (CET).

Work With Us: Vacancies at the Nairobi Convention

The Nairobi Convention is seeking a consultant and Program Assistant. The consultant will be expected to produce a review of National Oil Spill Contingency Plans and finalize the regional coordination and cooperation framework on oil spill preparedness in the WIO Region. The Program Management Assistant will be responsible for the implementation of the Nairobi Convention, the current programme of work, strategic action programme, related projects of the Convention and preparation of follow-up project proposals, among other tasks.

Kenya removed from piracy red list

The global shipping industry has removed Kenya maritime waters within the Indian Ocean from the piracy red list, 12 years after it was designated a high-risk area (HRA). The move will save Kenya and East Africa millions of shillings in insurance and other security expenses, and could open up Kenya’s ports for more business.

Kenyan maritime waters were designated as high-risk area in 2009 by BMP-5, which comprise five largest global shipping industry associations.

The first complete map of the world’s shallow tropical coral reefs

Scientists have completed the first-ever global, high-resolution map of the world’s shallow tropical coral reefs. The map is part of the Allen Coral Atlas, an open-access, user-friendly coral reef monitoring platform, which is now the most comprehensive, consistent and continually updated resource available, according to the developers.

The new mapping platform, which includes a bleaching detection tool, provides an unprecedented overview of the trends and changes in global coral reef health.

International Ocean Data Conference 2022 – The Data We Need for the Ocean We Want

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of International Oceanographic Data and Information is pleased to announce the “International Ocean Data Conference 2022 – The Data We Need for the Ocean We Want”, to be held in Sopot, Poland between 14-16 February 2022 as a hybrid event.

The deadline for submission of conference abstracts is Friday 29 October 2021.
