COP26 roundup: multilateral move to end oil and gas exploration

Ten national and subnational governments have announced an end to the exploration and extraction of oil and gas at the COP26 UN climate talks in Glasgow, UK. The Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA) is the first time governments have worked together to transition away from oil and gas production. However, major oil and gas economies such as Russia and Saudi Arabia have not joined BOGA.

Famous South African Sardine Run Doesn’t Benefit Sardines: Study

According to a study published September 15 in Science Advances, the KwaZulu-Natal sardine run is an ecological trap: a scenario where the fish’s behavior drives them into an unfavorable habitat that decreases their chances of survival. Fewer than 10 percent of all sardines living off the South African coast participate in the winter migration.

Seychelles-Supported ‘Great Blue Wall’ Initiative Launched At Global Climate Change Conference

An initiative to conserve, restore and sustainably use marine and coastal ecosystems in the western Indian Ocean called the Great Blue Wall launched on Wednesday at the UN climate change conference, COP26, in Glasgow. Under the initiative, 10 western Indian Ocean countries, including Seychelles, presented plans to establish a network of marine conserved areas.

Upcoming: Nairobi Convention 10th Conference of Parties (COP10)

The Tenth Meeting of Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention (COP10) will be a platform to reflect on the progress made by Contracting Parties in protecting the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region since the last Conference in 2018. It will be taking place from 23 – 25 November 2021.

‘Nature-based solutions’ prove divisive at Glasgow climate talks

A draft decision published emphasized “the critical importance of nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based approaches, including protecting and restoring forests, to reducing emissions, enhancing removals and protecting biodiversity”. If adopted it would be the first time “nature-based solutions” made it into a UN climate pact.

The road to recovery in the marine sector

The global freight and shipping industry accounts for nearly 97% of international trade. The slowdown in demand and cargo volumes at the height of the pandemic resulted in significant reductions in the number of vessels calling, with some ports experiencing a decline in exports because of the closure of destination ports in Asia and Europe.

2ª Edition of the Growing Blue Conference

The edition of the first conference recognizes that knowledge based on scientific research and technology, is the basic key to the development of the Blue Economy. There is a need to target investment resources, both in training and in strengthening or building technical and institutional capacity enabling science and technology to feed into the development of a sustainable Blue Economy.
