Coelacanth discoveries in Madagascar

This paper provides a comprehensive account of Madagascar coelacanths and demonstrates the existence of a regionally important population and suitable habitat, correcting an earlier hypothesis that coelacanths in southwest Madagascar were strays from the Comoros. It also discusses the vulnerability of coelacanths and makes recommendations for further research.

Leveraging Space Tech for SDG 14; Life Below Water

According to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Activities (UNOOSA), the potential of space in supporting the SDGs is wide. In addition, space-based services and technologies are critical in understanding climate change. One way to leverage space resources for marine life conservation is via monitoring of algal blooms, and collecting ocean data.

Assessing population status and trends of White-tailed Tropicbirds in the Seychelles

The Seychelles Archipelago has an abundance of seabirds but regional seabird population breeding successes and trends data are not readily available. This research uses monitoring data on White-tailed Tropicbirds to present the first nation-wide assessment of the status and trends of breeding success at five key sites.

COVID-19 impacts on coastal communities in Kenya

Fisheries is a key sector in Kenya, providing monetary income and animal protein to about 70% of the coastal communities. This study details the findings from 39 in-depth interviews with community members, community leaders, and fish traders in five communities in Kenya about their experiences since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, 2020.

Concerned with the impacts of climate change, Seychelles has committed to decarbonize by 2050. Seychelles has developed a national blue economy road map anchored on identifying blue economy sectors that can generate wealth and sustainable management of marine resources. Aquaculture is of priority, to help build resilience among local communities and accelerate sustainable development.
