Protection outcomes for fish trophic groups across a range of management regimes

Understanding how Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) improve conservation outcomes across anthropogenic pressures can improve the benefits derived from them. An assessment showed that effective MPAs are more productive, relative to moderately protected MPAs. Significant biomass reduction across trophic groups as human density increases is evident. Therefore, reducing fisheries impacts and supporting MPAs is critical in densely populated areas.

The Nairobi Convention National Focal Points Meeting (Oct 21 – 22 2021)

The Nairobi Convention will be holding a national Focal Points meeting this Thursday and Friday to facilitate negotiations on specific elements of the COP agenda. They will report on the implementation of COP 9 decisions and recommendations. This meeting will pave the way for decision-making at the Tenth Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention (COP10).

WIOGEN Ocean Governance Virtual Conference (October 27 – 29, 2021)

WIOGEN aims to bring together leading academic scientists, researchers and policy makers to exchange and share their experiences and research results on all aspects of Ocean Governance in the Western Indian Ocean. It is an interdisciplinary platform for researchers, practitioners and educators to meaningfully network and present and discuss emerging issues and concerns in ocean governance.

Ocean Decade endorses new wave of Actions across the globe

The Ocean Decade endorsed ninety-four new Decade Actions across all ocean basins, building global momentum for ocean knowledge-based solutions ahead of major upcoming global summits on climate and biodiversity. It features 94 new Decade Actions covering activities across the world’s ocean basins, with projects led by institutions in Africa, Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries, as well as by early career ocean professionals.

Ocean Decade launches new Call for Decade Actions

The new Call for Decade Actions No. 02/2021 is an open invitation for partners from around the world to request endorsement for transformative Decade Actions that contribute to the Ocean Decade vision. It will focus on Decade programmes that address priority issues, including marine pollution, multiple stressors on marine ecosystems or the ocean-climate nexus. The Call will also invite proposals for Decade Contributions of in-kind or financial resources to support Ocean Decade coordination and Action costs.

3rd MeerWissen Call for Proposals on Nature-based Solutions Info Session

With this call, the MeerWissen Initiative seeks to support partnership projects between African and German research and scientific organizations that contribute to strengthening the knowledge base for marine and coastal Nature-based Solutions in Africa. This event will inform participants about the call and the guidelines for co-designing joint marine research projects in a dedicated Co-design phase prior to project implementation.
