Virtual training on Ocean Governance

The IOI-SA produces research, policy and strategy-related outputs to address key challenges of sustainable ocean governance in support of the bodies concerned with securing a peaceful, prosperous and healthy future for all. Starting August 30 2021- September 24 2021, IOI-SA will be facilitating a training on Policy, Law and Management for stakeholders in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region in partnership with the Nairobi Convention’s SAPPHIRE project.

The conservation status of marine biodiversity of the Western Indian Ocean

The Western Indian Ocean is comprised of productive and highly diverse marine ecosystems that are rich sources of food security, livelihoods, and natural wonder. The stability of these valuable resources, however, is being eroded by growing threats to marine life from, all of which are causing serious reductions in marine ecosystem services and the ability of these ecosystems to support human communities.

Call: OceanInfoHub Global Hub Search Portal Consultant / Service Provider

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) is seeking a Consultant/Company for a OceanInfoHub Global Hub Search Portal as a demonstration of the ODIS. The contractor will be charged with developing a front-end web portal that dynamically builds content based on the (meta)data shared by early implementers of the ODIS-Architecture.

Nairobi Convention Partners’ Meeting

This Partners’ meeting seeks to chart a way for strengthened and targeted approach towards partnerships for regional protection of the coastal and marine environment, management and development. It is organized pursuant to the Ninth Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention Decision CP.9/13, and will focus on Partners’ efforts in addressing existing and emerging regional issues in the WIO region, implementation of projects, activities and initiatives.

Measuring coastal city resilience to inform action

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s report, Africa’s Urbanisation Dynamics 2020, in East Africa urbanization levels increased by 63% from 2000 to 2015 and coastal cities are amongst the fastest growing population centers in the region. Large port cities like Dar es Salaam and Mombasa, and capitals of small island developing states have become home to millions, and are engines for economic prosperity and innovation.

New release: the WIO Journal of Marine Science!

A new issue of the Western Indian Ocean Journal of Marine Science (WIOJMS) has been published! The Western Indian Ocean Journal of Marine Science provides an avenue for the wide dissemination of high quality research generated in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region, in particular on the sustainable use of coastal and marine resources. This supports and promotes sustainable coastal development in the region, as well as contributing to the global base of marine science.

WIO Symphony Sensitivity Workshop: 2 Sept, 2021 at 10.00 AM – 16.00 PM EAT

This workshop will gather regional expertise and survey the sensitivity of marine ecosystems to human activities based on participants’ judgement. It aims to set the sensitivity scores for the first operational version of WIO Symphony by adjusting literature-based sensitivity scores based on personal expertise. The workshop contributes to the WIO Symphony initiative which seeks to co-develop and implement a tool for measuring cumulative environmental impact in the WIO region.
