Data and the Western Indian Ocean

This publication provides an assessment of the current state of affairs in the Western Indian Ocean when it comes to oceanographic data and research, including a summary of institutions, data sets, ownership, protocols, collab-oration, and more. Available in both English and French.

Study: reefs being fished unsustainably in E. Africa

A new study shows that fish stocks in coral reefs along the coast of East Africa have been fished to worryingly low levels, with 70% of reefs below maximum yield and 38% below sustainable levels. The findings are a best-case scenario; models suggest stocks could be much lower.

Resilience for coral communities in the WIO

Global environmental change and other site specific pressures are threatening coral reefs and the livelihoods of dependent coastal communities. This paper studies the effectiveness of strategies used to build the resilience of coral reefs and reef-dependent communities.

Vulnerability of Mozambique’s mangroves

This study used modeling to predict the vulnerability of mangroves in Mozambique to climate change hazards and erosion and distribution patterns. Results support new conservation strategies to protect these ecosystems.

Ocean circulation and North Kenya Banks

This study uses a high‐resolution, ocean model with remote sensing observations to demonstrate that the ocean circulation exerts an important control on the productivity over the North Kenya Banks (NKBs).

Comoros could lose >60% of its sandy beaches

This study shows that shoreline dynamics and coastal recession could result in the extinction of almost half of the world’s sandy beaches by 2100. Comoros alone could lose over 60% of its total sandy beaches.

Distribution of Two Estuarine Plant Species in South Africa

The aim of this study was to predict the potential shifts in the distribution of two estuarine species, Bassia diffusa (Thunb.) Kuntze (a functionally important salt marsh species) and Hibiscus tiliaceus L. (a functionally important coastal swamp forest species) under different climate change scenarios.
