Republic of Mauritius Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) Dashboard

The Nairobi Convention Secretariat has built interactive dashboards for a range of different Western Indian Ocean (WIO) data. The visualizations below showcase the MPAs in the Republic of Mauritius and was generated from our Marine Protected Areas (MPA) outlook that was produced in collaboration with the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA).

Notes

a) Fishing Reserves -They protect the fish, fisheries resources and critical habitats. Fishing methods are controlled and fishing gears are limited. Only basket trap and line fishing are allowed.
b) Marine Parks - Reserved for conservation, education and research, controlled recreation, awareness creation and limited extractive use in specific zones. 
c) Marine Reserves - Meant for conservation, education, research, recreational use and awareness creation. Extractive uses are not permitted therein except with the written authorization of the responsible authority. Only found in Rodrigues Island

a) ** The five fishing reserves of Rodrigues are approximately 20km2. The boundaries of the fishing reserves have been so far described using specific points on land and at sea, though their GPS coordinates have not been recorded and their areas not calculated.
