Land -Sea Interaction Planning Project Launch, Durban, Kwazulu-Natal
The Nairobi Convention together with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), within the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Large Marine Ecosystems (LME) are implementing a demonstration project regarding Land - Sea Interaction (LSI) for a coordinated and sustainable Ocean and Coastal Ecosystem Management approach in South Africa.
They will be having an initial project launch event to introduce the project's aims and objectives to stakeholders for the realization of better managed LSIs in South Africa. The demonstration projects have been ear-marked to be at the following municipalities: eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, King Cetshwayo District Municipality, and the uMkhanyakude District Municipality.
The SAPPHIRE project is supporting this GEF-funded project in the development of Land-Sea Interaction plans by facilitating these objectives:
- Supporting Policy Harmonization and Management Reforms towards improved ocean governance;
- Developing three oceans and coastal site plans for a coordinated ocean and coastal ecosystem management approach in South Africa; and
- Delivering best practices and lessons through innovative ocean governance demonstration.
The proposed LSI Workshop date and hybrid venue is as follows:
