Regional Workshop on the BBNJ Agreement – Western Indian Ocean, Eastern and Southern Africa coastal countries

In June 2023, the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement was adopted, marking an important step in global ocean governance. The Africa Group played a key role in the negotiations by supporting equity and multilateral cooperation, reflecting a strong commitment to the sustainable use and conservation of marine biodiversity.
This regional workshop, scheduled for 3–6 March 2025 in Mombasa, Kenya, will help Western Indian Ocean, Eastern, and Southern African states deepen their understanding of the BBNJ Agreement. It also responds to Decision CP11.3 by the Nairobi Convention Contracting Parties, which encourages contributions to the Agreement’s entry into force. Through expert presentations, group discussions, and scenario exercises, participants will explore strategies for ratification, domestication, and implementation while addressing regional priorities. By uniting policymakers, technical experts, and regional organizations, the workshop aims to strengthen Africa’s role in ocean governance, enhance cooperation across countries, and support long-term marine ecosystem health.
