James Njiru is a holder of PhD in Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries Biology, an MSc in Fisheries Biology and a BSC in Zoology/Chemistry. He has all over 30 years’ experience in sustainable environment issues mostly in aquatic ecosystem. 
He has taught and guided many students in several universities in Kenya. He has played a critical role in mentorship of several young scientists. He has carried out research in several disciplines in fisheries/environment leading to over 90 peer reviewed publications.
