James Njiru is a holder of PhD in Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries Biology, an MSc in Fisheries Biology and a BSC in Zoology/Chemistry. He has all over 30 years’ experience in sustainable environment issues mostly in aquatic ecosystem.
He has taught and guided many students in several universities in Kenya. He has played a critical role in mentorship of several young scientists. He has carried out research in several disciplines in fisheries/environment leading to over 90 peer reviewed publications.
He has led many national and regional programmes and is passionate about management, conservation, exploitation and governance of natural resources.
He has been a Head of department, Director of Undergraduate studies and Post graduate studies at Kisii University, Kenya. Currently he is the Director General/CEO Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute.
