I am a mid-career professional, a former fisheries officer and currently a Marine Conservation Warden at Mafia Island Marine Park. I deal with conservation and management of marine resources and its environment for 7 years now. I have a degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) and recently graduated a joint Erasmus Mundus Master Course on Maritime Spatial Planning from Venice, Azore and Sevilla Universities.
I am meteorologist, specializing in marine meteorology. where i work at marine and oceanography division of Kenya meteorological department.
My expertise are in Air-sea interaction, Ocean circulation, climate change on marine environment.
I am an environmental earth scientist with a bias in coastal processes and marine ecosystems conservation and management, specifically shoreline instability and beach erosion vulnerability assessment and monitoring. I also have research interests in near shore sediment and hydrodynamics influencing beach morphological dynamics.
I am also engaged in assessment of environmental accountability and governance systems in small and artisanal extractive and mining processes. I do habitats mapping for sustainable restoration and conservation.
I have great interest in artisanal fisheries research, coral reef resilience, management and conservation.
I work on marine pollution and currently focusing on plastic pollution. This involves:
- Marine litter characterization and quantification
- Monitoring and assessment of marine litter and micro plastics
I am a co-author in four published papers on the subject of marine litter pollution.
My work focuses on marine conservation through locally managed marine areas, enhancing sustainable marine resource use. Communicating science to local communities. And putting action to science at the local level to enhance the change that is desired.
I believe that the success of community based natural resource management lies in empowering locals to take up the mantle through good governance, understanding and engaging in economically viable social enterprises.
Lenice currently serves as a project manager (Science & Policy) for CORDIO East Africa. She has over nine years of experience working on development-focused projects from 2010, transitioning to more research-oriented work in 2014. Her past six years have focused on transforming coastal and marine resource management within Western Indian Ocean region (WIO) through research, encompassing multilevel climate change adaptation and governance; community-based natural resource management with a focus on artisanal fisheries management and community-driven management of marine litter.
Coral reef ecologist, specializing in reef resilience aspects and coral bleaching, coral reef monitoring and coordination of regional reef ecology data aggregation.
