Madagascar
The fishery for the mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) is a purely traditional fishing practice on which many fishing communities are completely dependent. Three main production areas for crabs have been identified as Boina region, Menabe region and Sofia region (inthe mangrove swamp of Sahamalaza (around Maromandia). Fishing productivity is estimated at about 2.5 mT/km2/year (Ralison, 1987).
Two main factors impact on the sustainability of the crab fishery:
Oil Spill Preparedness - At Sea and Shoreline Response

Yves Jean Michel Mong is the current director of the National Center for Environmental Research (CNRE). He has worked in this research center since 1989, just one year after the creation of the center, where he had the privilege of working and enriching his professional experiences under the direction of the founder of the CNRE, Professor RAKOTOVAO Lala Henriette.
He is an expert hydrologist and Environmentalist.
RANAIVOSOA Rija Mamitiana Olivier has been working at the ONE since 2006 as a GIS / remote sensing expert and data scientist at the department in charge of monitoring and managing environmental information system. He is familiar with data management process, and has been involved in the identification of indicators related to the environment.
The Bombetoka Estuary is highly vulnerable to pollution from Mahajanga city’s tourism, agricultural, industrial, and other sectors. Tests of the water by the National Centre For Environmental Research (CNRE) indicate the presence of toxic heavy metals and hydrocarbons that pose serious risks to both human and marine life. The project will demonstrate how water quality and sediments can be improved by developing a regulatory framework and monitoring system—a framework which will provide the basis for the development of national wastewater standards.
