The Nairobi Convention, through the GEF-funded SAPPHIRE and WIOSAP projects, supported the development of a Draft Regional Framework for Ecosystem Monitoring in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). The framework aims to standardize national ecosystem monitoring efforts, address gaps in coverage, and align monitoring programs with regional priorities and global commitments. A situational assessment revealed inconsistencies in national monitoring efforts, highlighting the need for coordinated strategies, partnerships, and capacity-building to enhance ecosystem monitoring across the region.
To advance this work, the Nairobi Convention Secretariat partnered with Rhodes University to engage national institutions and refine national monitoring programs. Outcomes from the workshop included refined inputs for the regional framework and enhanced knowledge exchange on national ecosystem monitoring processes.
