The relationship between environment, society and economy in urban centres are of key importance in the WIO region. In particular, there is a need to better understand these interdependencies, and the associated constraints to achieving the objectives of the SDGs, the Paris Climate Agreement and the Sendai Risk and Disaster Reduction Framework. This understanding should inform planning and decision-making in city environments.

Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) has grown conceptually and operationally mainly in the last four decades since its inception in the United States of America in the early 1970s. The concept and practice of ICZM is not yet well understood, although it has gained widespread acceptance as a management system and vehicle for rational and sustainable utilization of coastal zone resources and uses.

The Contracting Parties to the Nairobi Convention have received funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to implement a Project entitled ‘Implementation of the Strategic Action Programme for the protection of the Western Indian Ocean from land-based sources and activities’ (WIOSAP). The Project will be implemented and executed through a ‘Partnerships Approach’ with the UNEP Nairobi Convention Secretariat being the Executing Agency.

SDG 14 offers a great opportunity to advance ocean sustainability in the WIO to address current and emerging threats.It is underpinned by targets addressing conservation and sustainable use of the ocean, seas and marine resources, including coastal zones, and targets referring to capacity building and ocean governance.

Focal Points, government representatives as well as representatives of partner organisations, Indian Ocean Commission and UNEP attended the Nairobi Convention Focal Points Meeting on 26 February 2014 in Mombasa, Kenya. The meeting was organized by the Secretariat for the Nairobi Convention at the kind invitation of the Government of Kenya.
