He is an expert hydrologist and Environmentalist.
I am an early career researcher with a focus on the science-policy nexus of deep and open-ocean biodiversity governance.
Since 2007 I have been the manager and principle oceanographer at the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) node for marine offshore systems. I conceived the node and have grown it to a thriving, internationally recognised diverse team of multi-disciplinary scientists, technicians, students and project managers.
I have been working in the field of Marine Water Quality and Estuarine Management for more than 30 years.
My key areas of expertise include:
Márcia Marques holds a MSc in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation and is a PhD candidate on Ocean Sciences, Technology and Management, with a research grant funded by the Portuguese Science Foundation.
Márcia worked as a researcher on marine and environmental issues and in parallel co-coordinated the Portuguese Hub of the Atlantic Strategy´s Assistance Mechanism. She worked on several scientific projects and networks (CYTED Ecomar, Oceangov and Marcons COST Actions and Transatlantic MPAs).
Geospatial analysis and multispectral remote sensing expert, focussing on coastal and other landscape dynamics and degradation, and coastal climate change adaptation. Recently developed South African coastal and estuarine climate change related flood and erosion risk indices on a national level.
Professor of Environmental Geochemistry and administrator. He has conducted and published research on pollution of water (rivers, streams, lakes, dams, groundwater, ocean), soils and air, as well as on environmental impacts of geothermal energy resources.
My professional career has primarily focused on human-shark conflict and shark and ray ecology, conservation and management.
I currently work for WCS as part of their shark and ray program in the Western Indian Ocean. This work focuses on shark and ray conservation primarily through understanding their ecology and threats, and working with other NGOs, scientists, government institutions and regional seas programs to inform and recommend policies which will benefit communities and shark and ray conservation in the region.
