The Nairobi Convention together with the  Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), within the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Large Marine Ecosystems (LME) are implementing a demonstration project regarding Land - Sea Interaction (LSI) for a coordinated and sustainable Ocean and Coastal Ecosystem Management approach in South Africa.

This Toolkit for Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment (CCVA) of near-shore marine social-ecological systems in the Western Indian Ocean represents a set of guidelines and instructions for undertaking CCVA on coastal social and ecological systems, focused on mangrove, coral reef and seagrass ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean region (WIO). The Toolkit comprises a background on climate change and climate change vulnerability, including conceptual and analytical vulnerability assessment frameworks.

This workshop will take place between 1 - 4 November 2023 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The objective will be to train and develop capacity of MPA managers and OECMs practitioners on effective and sustainable management of marine and coastal resources in the Western Indian Ocean Region. Specifically, the training will entail regional diagnosis of challenges and priorities facing MPAs; MPA certification, developing and implementing adaptive management and monitoring plans; setting new MPA management standards and reporting in line with SDG 14 and-the Global Biodiversity Framework.
