Welcome to the Eleventh Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention (COP 11)

The Eleventh Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention (COP 11) is crucial in enhancing ongoing effort to protect, manage and develop the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region. COP 11 will serve as a platform for reflection, collaboration, and decisive action by the Nairobi Convention Contracting Parties.

Dates

This year, COP11 will take place in two segments.
  1. The first segment will be held on the 20-21 of August 2024,  where Experts, Partners, and national Focal Points will be deliberating on the work programme and proposed areas of  Decisions.
  2. The second segment will be held on 22 of August 2024, where the Heads of Delegation meeting will evaluate the implementation of the Convention’s Programme of Work 2022–2024, guide on the work programme for 2025–2028 and provide strategic decision for the implementation of the Convention and its Protocols.

The one-year inception phase of the Environfish-WIO project began in March 2023 after the project

The meeting in Swakopmund has brought together key stakeholders from across Africa to discuss and shape the future of ocean governance. Delegates include representatives from African Regional Seas Conventions, Regional Economic Communities, UNEP’s Regional Office for Africa, and the Nairobi Convention, among others. Their mission: to harmonize efforts, share insights, and create a unified strategy for managing the ocean and coastal resources sustainably.

The WIO Critical Habitats Outlook is one of the main outputs of Component A of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project ‘Implementation of the Strategic Action Programme for the protection of the Western Indian Ocean from land-based sources and activities (WIOSAP)’, designed to respond to sustainable development goal (SDG) 14.2 and 14.5; and related Aichi Biodiversity targets, besides promoting various management approaches and tools.
