The Nairobi Convention executes the SAPPHIRE project, implemented by UNDP with GEF funding, to enhance ocean governance in the Western Indian Ocean Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs). The Nairobi Convention, under the ACP MEAs 3 Programme, drafted a Regional Ocean Acidification Action Plan and a 10-year implementation plan for the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) to enhance ocean governance, mitigate acidification, and build resilience. In June 2023, the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement was adopted, marking an important step in global ocean governance.
