The sixth PSC meeting for the WIOSAP project was organized with the overall objective of providin strategic guidance for effective implementation of the activities in the WIOSAP project based on the recent MidTerm Review (MTR) findings.

In December 2023, the GEF-funded Western Indian Ocean Large Marine Ecosystems Strategic Action Programme Policy Harmonization and Institutional Reforms (SAPPHIRE) Project held its seventh Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting.  The meeting was convened in Maputo, Mozambique, concurrent with the 2023 Western Indian Ocean Science to Policy Forum. In attendance were Nairobi Convention and SAPPHIRE focal points.

The WIOSAP Project Steering Committee (PSC) comprised National Focal Points, UNEP/DEPI GEF IW representatives, the Nairobi Convention, and donor organizations. It provided strategic guidance, reviewed annual work plans, and coordinated stakeholders. The PSC also monitored and evaluated the project, ensuring results informed performance improvement and accountability. As needed, WIO-C, COI, SADC, Task Force Chairs, private sector representatives, and civil society participated as observers.

The Nairobi Convention executes the SAPPHIRE project, implemented by UNDP with GEF funding, to enhance ocean governance in the Western Indian Ocean Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs). The project aims to achieve long-term ecosystem management through policy harmonization and institutional reforms, aligning with the Strategic Action Programme (SAP) endorsed by participating countries. It focused on five key areas: policy harmonization, community engagement, private sector transformation, innovative governance demonstrations, and capacity development.
