Coral reef ecologist, specializing in reef resilience aspects and coral bleaching, coral reef monitoring and coordination of regional reef ecology data aggregation.
Lenice currently serves as a project manager (Science & Policy) for CORDIO East Africa. She has over nine years of experience working on development-focused projects from 2010, transitioning to more research-oriented work in 2014. Her past six years have focused on transforming coastal and marine resource management within Western Indian Ocean region (WIO) through research, encompassing multilevel climate change adaptation and governance; community-based natural resource management with a focus on artisanal fisheries management and community-driven management of marine litter.
Márcia Marques holds a MSc in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation and is a PhD candidate on Ocean Sciences, Technology and Management, with a research grant funded by the Portuguese Science Foundation.
Márcia worked as a researcher on marine and environmental issues and in parallel co-coordinated the Portuguese Hub of the Atlantic Strategy´s Assistance Mechanism. She worked on several scientific projects and networks (CYTED Ecomar, Oceangov and Marcons COST Actions and Transatlantic MPAs).
Francis started his career working for the French Ministry of Environment, then the World Bank headquarters in Washington D.C. at the Environment Department before becoming a consultant. He has been working for more than 20 years in providing services related to the conservation and sustainable use of natural – terrestrial, coastal and marine – resources including international cooperation projects development, implementation and evaluation worldwide.
My work focuses on marine conservation through locally managed marine areas, enhancing sustainable marine resource use. Communicating science to local communities. And putting action to science at the local level to enhance the change that is desired.
I believe that the success of community based natural resource management lies in empowering locals to take up the mantle through good governance, understanding and engaging in economically viable social enterprises.
I am an environmental earth scientist with a bias in coastal processes and marine ecosystems conservation and management, specifically shoreline instability and beach erosion vulnerability assessment and monitoring. I also have research interests in near shore sediment and hydrodynamics influencing beach morphological dynamics.
I am also engaged in assessment of environmental accountability and governance systems in small and artisanal extractive and mining processes. I do habitats mapping for sustainable restoration and conservation.
