The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) is exceptionally rich in biodiversity, and supports some of our most productive and valuable ecosystems, providing resources and benefits for communities, as well as an ever-growing and diverse mix of users and industries. It has been central to the development agenda of coastal countries, having been positioned as a salve, or a solution to various social and economic struggles being faced by coastal nations.

This workshop will take place between 1 - 4 November 2023 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The objective will be to train and develop capacity of MPA managers and OECMs practitioners on effective and sustainable management of marine and coastal resources in the Western Indian Ocean Region. Specifically, the training will entail regional diagnosis of challenges and priorities facing MPAs; MPA certification, developing and implementing adaptive management and monitoring plans; setting new MPA management standards and reporting in line with SDG 14 and-the Global Biodiversity Framework.

In December 2023, the GEF-funded Western Indian Ocean Large Marine Ecosystems Strategic Action Programme Policy Harmonization and Institutional Reforms (SAPPHIRE) Project held its seventh Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting.  The meeting was convened in Maputo, Mozambique, concurrent with the 2023 Western Indian Ocean Science to Policy Forum. In attendance were Nairobi Convention and SAPPHIRE focal points.
